How is deviantART, I've registered about five times, but never really got into the site...

Well, it has forums, chat rooms, etc.

The main purpose is to submit your "Art" which includes poetry, graphics, paintings, comic books, anything relating to culture really. There's roleplaying in the chats. Certain groups have contests. "Guarded" was written with a partner by one of the contests.

Contests? Are there cash prizes? Also, in you PM, "watcher", what is this?

A watcher is a person who likes your work, and they will be notified when you add art or a journal, they can adjust this via settings.

I'm not sure if there are cash prizes, but it's a possibility. You can sell your own art through the site for free though.
