| millions of people throughout the world have been celebrating what they think is the beginning of a new year yesterday and today , depending on where you live and what your time zone is , but let us look at a few facts ...A new year starts when the SUN has finished its downward declination south of the celestial equator, and appears to stand still for a day or two around DEC 21ST-22ND which is the winter solstice ,before it starts its return journey back to the northern hemisphere and north of the celestial equator , therefore the start of a new year for the northern hemisphere which awaits the return of the SUN in spring , is DECEMBER 21ST-22ND , thats when the astronomical new year starts, so why are we celebrating it today ?.. 2010 Event Date Time (UT) Perihelion January 3 00 Vernal (Spring) Equinox March 20 17:32 Summer Solstice June 21 11:28 Aphelion July 6 11 Autumnal Equinox September 23 03:09 Winter Solstice December 21 23:38 |

Convience and Profit, Starting with Halloween and Thanksgiving you have a long Shopping season for retailers to make money. As mentioned elswhere Christmas was set for political/religious reasons not historical accuracy, and new years a week later made for a nice long holliday. We could very easily shift the calander so that Jan 1 fell on the Winter Solstice, but what would it matter. I am not aware of anyone actually celibrating the Solstice, and the celebration in no way effects the actual event. - - - BTW is anyone here familiar with the begining of the song 'White Christmas' The original did not start with 'I'm dreaming' but with the words 'The sun is shining, and the grass is green, the orange and palm trees sway'. This part was dropped when the song was used in the movie, it didn't make sense to be singing about being in Beverly Hills L.A. when singing in Vermont. A lot of things are done for no good reason, just profit. |

Unfortunatly this going around seems to be in a downward spiral, as in down the drain. |
